I love that Prince voluntarily put that picture of himself out.
Feargy

Hey Feargy,
I was thinking the exact same thing. He’s definitely got the “WTF” facial expression down pat.
But you do have to admit that he was having a great hair day…
Thanks for stopping by Feargy,
Bschooled:)
Another stellar assortment of musical recordings, Bschooled.
I’m particularly gratified to see Mr. Steve Allan topping the billboard charts. At the time of the album’s release there was some controversy over the picture on the front cover. You may not have noticed but in an attempt to woo a younger audience, Mr. Allen flashed some rudimentary and early “gang signs.” I believe that the combination of the thumb up and open palm was an invitation to join him for a malted at the local soda shop. Risqué stuff back in the day.
Wonderful work as always, Bschooled.
Your friend,
Don
Don,
As a matter of fact, I did notice Mr. Allen’s questionable hand gestures. That’s the reason why I was feeling somewhat “apprehensive” about posting this album.
I have to say that I’m relieved to find out it’s a vintage gang sign and not something you’d find in the 1950′s version of the Urban Dictionary, though. I was a little worried that I’d inadvertently offend my “70+” fans out there by posting a photo of Mr. Allen trying to “pitch a woo” (so to speak).
Thank-you for the perceptive and enlightening comment, Don. Not only are you extremely wise, you’re the only man I know who can rock both a trilby and a Santa hat.
Your friend,
Bschooled
I was a bit worried about the width of his tie. Looks a bit narrow to me.
I agree, bmj2k.
Mr. Allen could really learn a thing or two about fashion from the male members of the “Procla-somethings”…
You gotta dig the Schytts – they just know how to put together an amazing compilation of music. And what a great time to give a little holiday cheer with that wonderful track. “Oh Holy Schytt” is becoming a holiday classic in my house (completely unrelated to the cursing that is involved in stringing Christmas lights and burning…oops…baking Christmas cookies).
You just know when you look at Conway Twitty that he has a huge brain – just look at the height of that cap! Amazing!
I really feel for the Procla-somethings. It’s got to be stressful to deal with all that giving! I think they need to get together with the Schytts and put out a new song – something along the lines of “He keeps giving and we don’t give a Schytt” . It couldn’t hurt to try, could it?
We seem to have have a lot in common, Talon. “Oh Holy Schytt” is the only Christmas song I can never seem to get out of my head. I find myself singing it at work, during rush hour…heck, I’ve even been known to sing it in the summer months (especially the mornings after “girls nights out,” when I find myself waking up in a strange house next to an even stranger man. I find it calms me).
You know what they say about guys with big brains, don’t you? Cerebral Edema.
(Sad, really.)
“He keeps giving and we don’t give a Schytt” sounds like a one hit wonder if I ever heard one! In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up on the next edition of “Billboard’s Greatest Hits”. I mean, I don’t know that for sure (keep in mind that I have no control over these things), but with a title like that, even if the lyrics are schytty it really has no other choice but to go Platinum (or at least tungsten).
Thank you for the hilarious comment, Talon. It’s because of you that the Schytt’s will never die.
(I have no idea what that means, btw)
The best part about the Schytts was that they were the first group to actually hire a marketing team. Who can forget hearing this phrase on Radio and TV
“Everybody Get the Schytts”
You forgot my favorite Prince Song.
“My treasure trail starts at my neck”
Ha! Who didn’t love “Everybody Get the Schytts”?
I’m sure you probably know this Bearman, but if it weren’t for that song, “Everybody Wang Chung” never would have been the smash hit that it was. (Especially when you consider the fact that it was basically the same song in a different language.) And I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that a world without “wang chunging” is like a world without water.
Or at least diet soda.
Oh, and I forgot Prince’s “Treasure Trail” song for a reason, Bearman. An extremely obvious (and aesthetically-unpleasing) one….
How can you forget with the picture of the top of his trail on the album cover.
I couldn’t get past his luxurious Bee-Gee hair (the tresses crowning his head).
Honestly, the 70s were like the visual dark ages, we came so close to becoming apes again…I can’t believe we made it.
Conway Twitty bonus track: My Third Wife Almost Caught Me Loving You in the Bathroom
Oh Schytt, that’s the ‘Proclamations.” It turns out the group was finally able to get a restraining order against Him.
Ha! Funny you should mention “My Third Wife Almost Caught Me Loving You in the Bathroom,” FJ. I heard that song for the first time just the other day. My Boss is getting married to the Secretary (wife number 4), and he wanted my opinion on whether or not it would be a good ditty (or should I say “Twitty”) to serenade her with at the reception (he ‘dabbles’ in Country).
Oh, The Proclamations…no wonder I couldn’t figure out their name, it was being partially covered under the Witness Protection Program.
Not that it will do any good, mind you. Based on what I heard, He always has a way of finding you.
Pretty Deep Schytt, B!
“In My Mind I Lasted Longer Than Eight Seconds” — The song brings back priceless yet vague memories of young love (37) and a messy backseat disengagement. Damn jockey shorts and complicated bra fasteners . . .
“He Keeps On Giving A Song”: My parents gave me the exact same leisure outfit for Easter Mass in 197whatever. The white piping drove that painful memory home, hearing the frantic struggles of fellow classmates from catechism, as stern parents hushed mocking laughter. Thank God John Travolta proved the cruel bastards wrong, with poly suits that could napalm your ass if exposed to a hot light bulb. “Oooo, oooo, oooo, oooo, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive . . .”
One look at His Purple Heinous, and I can easily guess the object of Conway Twitty’s affection. This would explain Prince’s little known B-side song, “Let Me Be Your Prison Bitch.”
That wraps up the flashbacks and obscure music trivia. Another outstanding post . . . I’ll order a dozen of each for the holidays, and pour more Captain into my bottomless eggnog. Thanks, B!
Stellar comment as always, Invasive1.
I’m pretty sure that even if I live to be Don’s age (which is indeterminite yet extremely old), I will still not have had as many “non-conventional” memories as you seem to have accumulated over the years. Although truth be told, I can relate somewhat to your “messy backseat disengagment”.
They didn’t call me “Backseat Bschooled” for nothing!
*Ahem*
Ok, moving on…
You’re right, “Let Me Be Your Prison Bitch” truly is a classic. Originally sung as a duet by George “Machine Gun” Kelly and Alvin “Creepy Karpis” Karpowicz, it was a big hit in the San Francisco Bay area back in the day.
Thanks for bringing back the memories, Invasive1. Even if they weren’t necessarily mine…
Good old Conway Twitty: he was rocking the trucker hat before it was cool (pre-C.W. McCall) and rocking the velour before it was never cool.
He must have done some writing for former President (and incisor afficionado) Jimmy Carter, who said something to the affect that he had “gotten more ass than Tiger Woods” in his heart several times. Not quite the mind, mind you, but his heart was in the right place (your pants).
Quite the discography, bschooled. It’s tragically hip in all the right places. You know what they say: “Schytt me once, shame on you; Schytt me twice, shame on me.”
Ha! Trust me CLT, I know that saying all too well…
Ah yes, C.W. McCall. Not only could the man rock a trucker hat like nobody’s business, if it weren’t for him, Blublockers would have gone out of business years ago. He’s like the Ron Popeil of “wtf” attire.
And not to sound like a know-it-all, but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t Jimmy Carter’s “heart”. Granted I was a little tipsy at the time, but when it comes to vital organs I can pretty much tell the difference with my eyes closed. (which, coincedentally enough, was how I spent the entire 47 second experience).
Thank-you for the well-played comment, CLT. You really know how to make “velour” fun again.
Sad to say, I actually own that Prince album.
Fortunately though, have yet to lisen to it.
Hey G,
If you do get a chance to listen to it, could you tell me if “S’up” and Huh?” are any good? I’ve been hearing mixed reviews, and I don’t want to go out and buy it if the only track I’ll really enjoy is “…heh” (I heard the extended version at a friends house and I have to admit it’s pretty catchy).
Always good to see you G,
Bschooled:)
Conway was a twit
You mean “twat”, don’t you? (past tense)
Schytts looks like a bad ABBA cover band :( WaterLOO
Steve Allen looks like a Urologist :( Your balls are all good!
Hang on I haven’t finished….
Twitty looks like a NASCAR mechanic
Proclamations – “A song” is the secret codeword for “head” .
Prince had to stand on a ladder to get into this photo :(
Haha!
I must say that I agree with your Schytts comment, frigginloon (Peter Pauper and his pun book have nothing on you).
In fact I agree with all of your observations…except for the one pertaining to Prince.
From what I was told, he was actually in a booster seat…
Just when I think there is no way you can offer up more fantastic tunes, you somehow raise the bar even higher by outdoing your earlier selections. Although, “In My Mind I Lasted Longer Than Eight Seconds” reminds me of a college beau who would play that f*cking tune over and over and over and over until one day I took that vinyl donut and cracked it into a bazillion pieces. Obviously, that was the end to our relationship, which was fine with me since in reality he only lasted 4 seconds.
Ha!
Oustanding story, YnB. I laughed, I cried (especially at the 4 seconds part)…it was better than “Cats”.
I could be wrong, but I think we may have dated the same guy…only instead of a vinyl donut, he played the song over and over on a TDK D-60 cassette.
So much in common, you and I…
